Studio Project #1: Related Cups

This was my first mug. I was experimenting and getting a feel for how to work with the clay. I was also playing around with the underglaze to get a feel for how it went on the clay and how it looked after getting bisque for the first time. I used a clear glaze over the underglaze, it looked whiteish when it was wet but once it dried went through the kiln again it came out very glossy and it really made the color pop. It is a heavier and thicker looking mug. The lip is a little thick but is smooth to touch. There are no sharp edges and no cracks. This was the first time I used the slip and score method to attach my handle and it is attached well but not super smooth and looks a little rough to the naked eye.

This is a picture of the first mug at a different angle. I took this picture to show how thick the lip is. For the future I plan to make the lip a little thinner and smooth the inside of my mug more so it doesn’t look so rough.

This is the second mug that I completed. I took what I learned from completing mug 1 and did a few things differently to see if I could make improvements from my first. My main focus was to make this mug look less thick and large, to make a thinner lip and a more narrow base. I also fixed my handle and did a better job slipping and scoring to have a cleaner look around the attached handled. I think I did a good job fixing and improving my mistakes from the first mug and plan to make my final set look more like this. I did not use the same color underglaze or design of the split colors because I wanted to experiment with more underglaze shades to see how they came out after being bisque. I chose this blue shade and did white on the inside and after being glazed with the clear glaze and put in the kiln it came out to be a darker blue almost black. I’ve learned a lot while working on my first set and know what I will and will not do for my final set.
